Peninisular War

Peninsular tours are ideal for a short break with a point interest. The majority of the British army's battlefields remain relatively unspoiled and are in beautiful countryside. The earlier battles 1808-1812 can be accessed via Lisbon (Lines of Torres Vedras, the storming of Badajos, Busaco, Albuera) or Lisbon (crossing of the River Douro, Sabugal, the combat of the River Coa, Fuentes d'Onoro, the fall of Almeida, the storming of Ciudad Rodrigo).

The battles of Salamanca and Talavera can also be accessed from Madrid.

The battles of Northern Spain (Vitoria, Sorauren, the storming of San Sebastian, the battles of the Pyrenees and the invasion of France) can all be accessed from Bilbao, San Sebastian and Biarritz).

In all cases there are comfortable places to stay, especially with the Parador and Pousada hotel groups which are often in dramatic locations such as castles and monasteries. Depending on how much you wish to see, and where, the tours generally take 3 to 5 days from the above access points. Hugh advises that all reservations be made through an ABTA approved agent.
